Removing a Wax Stain From Your Carpet

How To Remove Wax From Carpet

If you have ever had wax in your carpet, you know how hard it can be to remove. As candle warmers and scented wax have become more popular, wax on carpeting is a problem that has become more common. With the right tools and a little know how, though, you can get the wax out of your carpets. The things you will need are: clean white rags and paper bags, an iron, vacuum with a hose, and a credit card or something similar.

Here are the steps to get the wax out:
  1. Using the credit card, scrape up as much of the spilled wax as you can. Be careful not to damage the fibers on the carpet. Scrape it away from the carpet. Keep doing this until you are unable to remove any more wax using the card. Then set a bag of ice on top of the leftover wax to harden it and make it easier to remove.
  2. Use your vacuum to suck up as much of the loose wax as possible. Repeat this step as you break up more wax.
  3. After breaking away as much wax as you can, you will now want to melt the wax to help with removing the rest of the residue. To do so, place your paper bag over the wax and then place your hot iron on top of it. The iron should be on a low setting with the steam option off. You need to be careful not to leave the iron on too long. You don’t want to burn the carpet. Check the wax frequently. The goal is to just barely melt the wax. Move the iron around slowly while also moving the bag to a clean section so it can absorb the wax from the carpet.
  4. Once the wax is removed, it is possible you may still have some residue in the carpet. If you do, mix a solution of one part ammonia and one part water. Using a white rag, dip into the solution and then blot the stain. Never rub the stain since that will damage the fibers in your carpet. Keep blotting until the stain is gone.
  5. Once these steps are completed, rinse the area well to remove the ammonia and any other residue left behind. You can do this by pouring small amounts of cold water on the area then extract the water will towels or a shop vacuum. Repeat this stop several times to ensure you get it all out, then cover the area with a white rag and put a heavy object on top. The rag with the heavy object should remain there until the area is completely dry, then vacuum.
