How To Minimize the Affect of Age On Your CarpetOftentimes, someone will have their carpets cleaned and suddenly start to see it through new eyes. There carpets are left looking brand new and beautiful. It is true that having your carpets cleaned can make them look so much better, almost like your carpets are new again. Like everything else, though, your carpets will age.
The coloring of your carpeting is typically the most important factor with how your flooring looks. If the color is vibrant and there are no big stains or spots visible, most people will be happy with how their carpets look. We start to wonder, though, why our carpets start looking worn after a few years even when we clean them regularly. We want them to stay looking as new as the day we bought them. We assume that the dull appearance is merely from dirt in the main traffic areas. And, yes, dirt contributes a lot to your problem, but there are three other things that suck the life out of your carpets as well. One of these issues is abrasion. We track a lot of junk in on our shoes when we come inside, including sand, grit, dirt, pollen, pollution, and mud. These minerals get ground into the fibers of the carpet and scratch the carpet fibers, dulling their surface. This causes the light to reflect off the scratched fibers in a way that makes the colors look muted. This is called a permanent condition loss of luster. This is the main way that your carpets lose their vibrant colors. There is nothing you can do to bring back your carpet’s original luster then. Another issue faced by your carpets is pile crush. This happens in areas that receive a lot of foot traffic. The constant traffic crushes the carpet down, making your carpeting lose some pile height. This makes the carpet look and feel less soft and fluffy. The severity of this issue is dependent on the type of fiber and the density of the yarn, as well as the pile depth and carpet pad quality. The last issue we will discuss is pile distortion. This is when the pile yarn loses its twist or the yarns begin aligning in different directions. This is mostly seen in areas with high traffic and can cause the carpets to look dull and dingy. If your carpet pile has been distorted, it will not be able to be corrected. There are some carpets that are more prone to pile distortion than others.
